What's the dropout rate at YU and the other options you mention? I would guess that it's lower than 20%, but much higher than zero. The choice against sending to a secular residential college may not be as stark as you suggest, and the dropout rate overall may be worse overall...Avi Greengarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14267040237664555562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7626974447429315601.post-47290508766451865672009-10-06T19:33:11.408+02:002009-10-06T19:33:11.408+02:00This is an interesting post, but clearly begs a la...This is an interesting post, but clearly begs a larger question that is being discussed ad nauseum on lookjed and that is what is being accomplished in the education of a modern Orthodox Jew for the first 12 grades? Does a student graduating a Modern Orthodox school feel connected to Orthodoxy and can they articulate their belief system? We see many kids go off to Israel and veer to the right, is this the same as those going to college who veer to the left? Can the middle survive?

[Btw, we are seeing a larger number of those educated in a more right wing environment also veering away from Orthodoxy.]

To me, while YU, Lander or Israeli universities may be the answer for right now, the larger question remains, can the Hirschian philosphy of Torah Im Derekh Eretz or YU's Torah U'Madda work outside of the confines of certain institutions?

And if can't work, we will be seeing more piskei halacha like the Shabbat Elevator, with Rabbonim who don't have any understanding of mechanical workings? Can we survive that way?

All of our great Rishonim and Achronim had an understanding of the world and its philosophy, and it greatly enhanced their Torah view.

We need a serious communal cheshbon hanefesh to truly tackle this major issue.macabeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15369941741777245487noreply@blogger.com
